What Construction Automation’s Track Record Tells Builders

Construction automation has been promising to transform the jobsite for more than a century. But where has it actually worked?

Construction researcher Brian Potter recently explored that question by reviewing thousands of digitized issues of Architectural Forum, House & Home, and Engineering News-Record dating back to the 19th century. He used AI to identify examples of automated construction tasks, then supplemented that research with a broader search of industry archives and other sources.

Potter describes the project as an “existence survey,” not a statistical analysis. His goal was to understand what had been attempted, what appeared promising, and which approaches endured.

The successful examples generally fell into two categories.

The first involved moving work into factories, where materials and components could be produced under controlled conditions. Concrete batching, steel fabrication, windows, doors, roof trusses, wall panels and precast concrete have all benefited from some degree of automation.

The second involved on-site work that could be made factory-like: a machine following a predictable path while repeating the same motion. Road paving, tunnel boring, railroad maintenance, and concrete slipforming fit this model.

Automation struggled when projects contained too much variation. Bricklaying robots, for example, could do the repetitive parts of the job but struggled with corners, openings, uneven materials, and frequent repositioning. Setup, supervision, and adjustment often consumed the anticipated labor savings.

That history offers builders a useful lesson.

The value of automation doesn’t begin with the robot. It begins with the process. Standardized components, repeatable designs, better coordination and more off-site production create the conditions in which automation becomes economically useful.

AI and computer vision may help future machines adapt to unpredictable job sites. But builders don’t have to wait for humanoid robots to capture the underlying advantage.

The practical opportunity today is to make construction more predictable—allowing skilled people, proven systems, and emerging technology to produce more together.
