Every conversation about housing eventually runs into the same wall: labor.
Not enough skilled people. Not enough experience. Not enough time to train the next wave fast enough to keep pace with demand.
That’s why the NAHB Student Competition at the International Builders’ Show matters more than most people realize.
This isn’t a career fair or a classroom exercise.
Student teams spend months working through real-world residential construction problems—land use, budgeting, scheduling, risk, and execution—then defend their decisions in front of builders who know what actually works in the field.
In other words, it’s as close to jobsite reality as you can get without pouring concrete.
The growth of the competition tells its own story. Participation is rising. Diversity is expanding. And the level of preparation continues to sharpen. These students aren’t testing the waters. They’re committing to the craft.
For an industry facing chronic labor pressure, that matters.
The next generation of builders won’t solve every problem overnight. But they’re showing up earlier, better prepared, and more aligned with the realities of modern construction than many expect.
That’s encouraging and necessary.
